In 2014, a Mobile Market was created where the Freeport Farmers Market youth host an event in the community room of low-income senior housing complexes. At the event:
- The staff sells fresh produce to the senior at a moderate price.
- Nassau County Office for the Aging administers Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) checks to anyone who qualifies, giving seniors $20 to spend.
- Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Nassau County provides health and nutrition related information and host a cooking demonstration.
- A fitness specialist has an age appropriate “Let’s Move” segment, where seniors (even in wheel chairs) get exercise. They are taught how to work-out and are encouraged to exercise at least a half hour every day, five days a week.
The most important aspect of this intergenerational program is that is reached those senior who are less mobile and physically unable to get to a market location. We literally bring the market and a complete program to the where it’s needed in the community most. This program runs from July – August.
